How to Make UGC Ads With AI
UGC (user-generated content) ads work because they don't look like ads. They feel like a real person who happens to be filming, in a real room, talking about something they actually use. That's a hard thing to fake — but AI has gotten good enough that you can get close, if you brief it right.
What actually makes UGC convert
Before touching a tool, be clear on why UGC outperforms polished brand video in the feed:
- It's specific. A real person mentions a real detail — "I keep it by the sink", "the strap was digging into my shoulder". Generic copy kills the effect.
- It's imperfect. Handheld, natural light, a slightly awkward pause. Too clean reads as an ad and the viewer's guard goes up.
- It opens on a hook, not a logo. The first line is a problem, a claim, or a question — never a brand intro.
- It's one idea. One problem, one product, one reason it helped.
If your AI output has those four properties, it'll perform like UGC. If it's smooth, vague and brand-first, it won't.
Briefing the generator for a UGC feel
When you describe your product, push the prompt toward specifics and away from polish:
- Give it a persona: "a busy parent filming in their kitchen", "a gym-goer in the car after a workout". The setting matters as much as the words.
- Give it the exact pain point in the customer's language, not your marketing language. "My protein shakes were always lumpy" beats "suboptimal mixing performance".
- Ask for a spoken hook in the first second — a line the persona would actually say.
- Ask for captions that match the speech, word for word, casual styling.
Then generate a batch. LaunchReel returns five angles per run — for UGC, keep the ones that sound like a person and drop the ones that sound like a brochure.
Where AI UGC still needs your hand
Two things to fix in the editor every time:
- The opening line. Rewrite it until it sounds like something a friend would text you. This is 80% of the "authentic" feeling.
- Pacing. Real people ramble a little, then get to the point. Trim dead air, but don't cut it so tight it sounds scripted.
You can also mix approaches: use AI for the b-roll and product shots, and record your own voice over the top. The browser editor lets you swap the voiceover and re-time captions without re-generating.
A quick checklist before you publish
- Does the first line make you want to hear the second?
- Would a stranger believe a real customer said this?
- Is there exactly one claim, not a list?
- Captions on, readable on mute, matching the audio?
- Vertical, under ~30 seconds, no logo in the first 3 seconds?
If yes to all five, it'll pass as UGC in the feed.
